Review: Boomtown: Season One

Tuesday, August 26th, 2008

I’m not gonna lie to you. Lately I’ve been in the midst of a pretty big obsession with the Wahlbergs. It started out with just Mark but has since grown to include Donnie (thanks to the New Kids on the Block reunion!). So, when I looked Donnie up on IMDB I came across this show, Boomtown. When I clicked on it I thought it sounded really interesting and like something I would enjoy so I rented a couple discs from Netflix. Ever since then I’ve been obsessed with this show…and Donnie. (Hey, don’t judge me, I have already watched every single movie Mark has been in and I needed a new obsession)

Here’s a short synopsis from Netflix:

This acclaimed series, starring Donnie Wahlberg, Neal McDonough and Mykelti Williamson, puts a unique spin on the typical police drama. Each crime story is told from several points of view — the detectives’, the cops’, victim’s, the perpetrator’s, the rescue team’s, the district attorney’s and the media’s — all presented out of sequence, leaving viewers guessing about the facts of the crime until the very end.

I absolutely LOVE this show. It’s the best show I’ve seen in a very long time. Each episode starts out with a new crime and usually showcases one character, but they show the story from every one’s point of view (like it says in the description). It kinda reminds me a little bit of Law and Order or something like that but very unique. I love every single character on this show, which is a really hard thing to accomplish because I have a real issue with making sure I like the characters. Because they show the story from each person’s point of view, it allows us to see different sides of each character and really understand how they feel about what’s going on and also get a look at what’s going on in their lives at the same time. The acting is amazing too. The cast is perfect and everyone does such a great job with their characters. My personal favorites are Detective Joel Stevens (Donnie Wahlberg), Officer Tom Turcotte (Jason Gedrick), and Teresa Ortiz (Lana Parilla).

The fact that they tell the story from different points of view may scare some people off, but they do it in a way that really accentuates the story instead of hurting it by being repetitive. You will definitely never get bored during an episode of Boomtown. You have to check these DVDs out. You will not be disappointed.

I cannot believe that it was cancelled during it’s second season! With all the garbage that is on TV today, they couldn’t keep a really entertaining, unique, well-made show on the air? It absolutely disgusts me. Luckily I got my hands on the lost 6 episodes of the second season so I got to see the entire series. I adored it from start to finish and I would highly recommend it to anyone. In fact, I already made a bunch of people watch it and they all loved it too.

Review: Grey’s Anatomy: Season Two

Saturday, January 26th, 2008

Lately I’ve been going through a little bit of a Grey’s Anatomy obsession. After watching the first season I immediately had to start renting the second. After all they left it off with a huge cliffhanger and I just had to know what was going to happen.

Grey's Anatomy Season 2 DVD coverThe second season starts off with Dr. Shepard’s (or McDreamy…whichever you prefer) wife coming into the picture which results in a dramatic storyline between McDreamy, his wife, and Meredith. Will he decide to stay with his wife or end his marriage to be with Meredith? And more dramatic story lines arise between Meredith and George, Alex and Izzie, Dr. Burke and Christina…need I go on? The characters are all still the same with a few new faces. And after lots of hook ups, break ups and drama the season ends in yet another huge cliffhanger.

I absolutely loved the second season of Grey’s Anatomy. I was already hooked after the first season but now I’m in love. The first season was more of an introductory season where we get a feel for the characters, the plot and the story lines. Now, in the second season, they really get into more interesting subplots and much more exciting episodes. You can tell within the first few episodes that the season is going to be quite a ride.

I still absolutely love George. He is just so adorable. But all the characters are growing on me even more, even the ones I wasn’t too thrilled with in the first season. I can’t wait to start watching season three and see what kind of drama will arise. You’ve gotta love this show. It’s so addicting you just can’t stop watching it.

Cast of Grey’s Anatomy: season 2

The 6 disc DVD set contains all 27 uncut episodes as well as some extra features. The extras were better than they were on the season one set, but they could still improve. I’d love to see more behind the scenes type things featuring more of the cast.

Review: Grey’s Anatomy: Season One

Saturday, December 15th, 2007

Due to the craziness of Christmastime I haven’t been watching as many movies as I usually do which makes doing reviews more difficult. However, I did rent the first season of Grey’s Anatomy at Blockbuster last week. I always heard people talking about this show but for some reason I never caught it on TV until recently, but since I didn’t know what was going on I decided to rent the previous seasons and catch up with the rest of the world.

Grey's Anatomy Season One DVD cover The show is based on Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) and four other surgical interns: Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh), Isobel “Izzie” Stevens (Katherine Heigl), George O’Malley (T.R. Knight) and Alex Karev (Justin Chambers). Meredith and the others struggle with the pressures of their new jobs made more difficult perhaps by the resident they were assigned to, Dr. Bailey (Chandra Wilson) nicknamed “The Nazi”. When Meredith had a one night stand with a handsome man in a bar, she had no idea that man would turn out to be their boss, Dr. Shepard (Patrick Dempsey), an attending at Seattle Grace Hospital. Another attending as the hospital, Dr. Burke (Isaiah Washington) faces a similar secret relationship. The drastic changes in the lives of the new interns force them all to deal with new issues concerning family, co-workers, and forbidden relationships.

This DVD contains 9 episodes, some unaired scenes, behind the scenes footage and a few other extras. Short but sweet, since it’s only the first season.

Cast of Grey's Anatomy

I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this show since I was so unfamiliar with it and the actors were virtually unknown before the show began, but I was very pleasantly surprised. I’ve always been a fan of hospital dramas for some reason (House is one of my favorite shows) so I guess I shouldn’t have been so surprised by how much I enjoyed it. The reason why this show is so entertaining is not just the interesting patients and incidences that occur in the hospital, but more the characters. The storyline of the show is based mostly on character development, which works well because of such a wonderful cast. How could anyone not love Patrick Dempsey’s character “McDreamy”? But it turns out my favorite character on the show is George (played by T.R. Knight). His nervous, sweet, innocent ways are so endearing which makes his character so adorable! They all do a great job with the diverse roles of the different characters and the stories are very addicting. The season ends with quite the cliffhanger so I’ll have to go rent season two to find out what happens. I know everyone and their mom has been addicted to this show since the beginning but…better late than never I guess.
