Review: Casino Royale
I have never been a very big ‘James Bond’ fan. I’ll be honest and say that I have only seen the Pierce Brosnan versions. They were pretty much as “popcorn film” as you can get. They were alright, but nothing special to me.I have no interest in seeing the older James Bond films either. For being such a movie buff, this probably pretty surprising, but they just don’t interest me.
But Casino Royale has completely changed my opinion of James Bond. If every James Bond was like this, I would watch them again and again. This is how the series should have been done for a while.
Daniel Craig (who I already loved thanks to his work in Layer Cake), was excellent as Bond. He’s a great actor, and I was pretty impressed with his action work. I had only seen him in dramas prior to this film. That opening sequence is pretty incredible. It had SpiderMan-like action scenes and was a great way to start off the film.
The movie was longer than I expected, and it didn’t necessarily drag out, but I kept thinking it was about to end, then another sequence came along. I did like how you learn a lot about how Bond became Bond. You see how he becomes the womanizer and cold-hearted guy that he is in the later films.
For the first time, I’m looking forward to the next Bond film. If it is anything like this one, I will definitely try and check it out in the theater rather than wait for the DVD.
My Rating: 8/10
